STUDENT/WORKER CHALLENGES

Choose Three Students/Workers (from WorkBook 1 Extend activity)

Students:

One who worries about always getting things just right,
One who you believe has untapped potential, and
One who reminds you of yourself as a student.

Workers:

One who worries about pleasing everyone, never confronts,
One who is not very engaged in the work, doing minimum, and
One who reminds you of yourself.

Well, this was not an easy task… My thinking goes like follows:

No1: One who worries about pleasing everyone, never confronts
Focus on feelings and people (”pleasing everyone”) indicates for me a type 1 or 4. Creates possibilities that can suit everybody (”never confronts”). Either is the best, so to speak. It seems to be a type 1 person?

To support and direct this person? I would coach them to tell their needs and what´s important for them. Give facts and analysis that support whats important to know for that person. Learning approach from type 1 to 2. Brings self-confidence and decrease anxiety of confronting others. And support the result of chosen way/answer (type 4). Praise them for their concern for others.

No2: One who is not very engaged in the work, doing minimum
Knows the work indicates a ”how oriented” person (type 3). ”Not very engaged”, is a lack of why is this of value for me?

To support and direct this person? I would work with type 1 learning approach, ”why their job is important” and ”what value it gives” to others and the organization. And what will happen when we all ”do more” of this (type 4).

No3: One who reminds you of yourself
Focus on how I can use this, and synthesize for the work to be done.

To support and direct this person? Give good reasons ”why” (type 1) and possibilities to learn more to get usefulness. (type 2 and 3). This will support the innovativeness and possibilities of type 4.

    1. Worker @1. Coaching them to speak up, while honoring their concern for others would work. Take it one step further and have them give you an example of an instance when they were afraid to do that and then work it through regarding together how different it might have been if they had.
Worker #2: Yes, that is what I would do also, but I would take it one step further and force the to see that I would not allow it to continue.
Worker #3: In other words, use the cycle. Of course I agree with that approach. (Smile)

  3. Workers:

One who worries about pleasing everyone, never confronts: Seems to be Type 1.
I would coach them to speak up and express themselves and their feelings. I would give them words they can use to express themselves so it doesn't feel like they are confronting (what-2) Encourage them to take action in expressing themselves (how-3) so that in future situations they can evolve in how they participate (if?-4)

One who is not very engaged in the work, doing minimum-
This seems like a 3 since they know how to do their job they just are not wanting to do it. This shows a lack of why. I would encourage this person to list out what they likea about their job and what areas they may not enjoy. THen I'd help them determint the why behind their work- (type 1) so they can improve.
One who reminds you of yourself. Type 1
I would give them clear instructions on what and how (2,3) they need to perform their job so they can take on the responsibilities and lead to future exploration (4)
